What OpenClaw Actually IS: Chatbot vs Agent
Here’s the distinction that changes everything:
ChatGPT and Claude wait for you to ask. You open the app. You type a prompt. They respond. Then they wait again. You’re the one initiating every interaction.
OpenClaw runs on a schedule whether you’re there or not. Every 30 minutes, it checks a file called HEARTBEAT.md, sees what monitoring loops you’ve configured, and executes them. No prompt from you needed.
This isn’t one AI assistant. It’s a team running a shared checklist.
How OpenClaw “Knows” Things: The 5 Markdown Files
OpenClaw’s intelligence comes from five plain-text markdown files you configure. Don’t worry in articles to come, I will share everything about them along with my whole set up.

1. SOUL.md - The employee handbook. Defines the agent’s core values, communication style, and governance rules - what it’s allowed to do, what requires your approval, and what’s off-limits. Example: “Be genuinely helpful, not performatively helpful. Earn trust through competence. Never send half-baked replies to messaging surfaces. You’re not the user’s voice.”
2. USER.md - The profile card. Your name, role, work patterns, time zone, and working style preferences. Helps the agent contextualize its monitoring. Example: “I’m a YouTube creator. I film Mondays and Wednesdays. I prefer step-by-step instructions. I need follow-ups drafted by Tuesday afternoons.”
3. IDENTITY.md - The business card. The agent’s name, avatar, emoji, and “vibe.” You can run multiple agents, each with a different identity. Example: “Name: Morning Briefing Agent. Vibe: efficient and concise. Emoji: ☀️ . Role: summarize emails, flag urgent items, surface calendar conflicts.”
4. MEMORY.md - The notebook of verified facts. Stores durable context about your environment, decisions, and recurring patterns. Should stay small and structured - not a dumping ground.
Important: OpenClaw auto-updates this file, which is how the META’s AI safety director incident happened. As memory grows, safety instructions from SOUL.md can get pushed out of the AI’s context window.

5. HEARTBEAT.md - The daily checklist. This is where you define monitoring loops. Example: “Every 30 minutes, check Gmail for emails from clients. If found, summarize in #client-updates Slack channel.”
Of course there are other markdown files as well like AGENTS.md, TOOLS.md, HABITS.md but we will cover them later.
Daily logs - Timestamped records of what the agent did. Useful for debugging and auditing actions.
In the live session I had on OpenClaw, Wyndo’s analogy stuck with me:
It’s not one assistant. It’s a team with a daily checklist. SOUL.md is their employee handbook - the rules they can’t break. HEARTBEAT.md is what they’re checking every half hour. MEMORY.md is their notebook - but if nobody curates it, it fills up with noise and they forget the handbook.
